Peace rally in Asheville
16 04 2007
The WNC Peace Coalition together with 18 other activist groups staged a fourth annual anti-war rally in downtown Asheville, March 24.
Music for the event included Kuumba Zuweena and the Ancestral Rhythm (joined here by Daniel Barber on drums). The crowd ran up to about 300 participants at the high point. The two hour program began with a talk by Unitarian Universalist minister, Rev. Sarah York, offered a mix of other speakers and entertainers, and ended with a dove release.

Of course, they aren’t actually doves, but white homing pigeons.
Still, it’s the thought that counts.
The annual event has dwindled in attendance as opposition to the war has spread, perhaps reflecting some measure of burnout among activists who have seen little change in the administration’s posture in reaction to protests. Election organizing has arguably had a much larger effect, with the Democratic majority in Congress voting last week to set a definite date for withdrawal.
